Lisianthus doesn't need much in the way of post harvest treatment. Don't hold them for more than a week, as they can and will become rootbound and will be stunted later in life. BH: Yeah, that can be with a hose. Don't hold your lisianthus in a tray. Me too. Yeah, just look for those shortest coolest days of the year and that's when you're going to want to plant if you're in a really warm spot. The Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers, ASCFG. That's also where the fertility comes from. BH: I'm sure, yeah, Im a bad salesman, I should have tried to promote myself more. The only thing I recommend is maybe don't grow these outside. Just like humans, some Lisianthus varieties are genetically programmed to enter their reproductive phase earlier or later than others. And the answer is no, but let metell you why, so the majority ofthe seed is produced in Japan. You can grow it all over the place. So, if you're cutting its flower off, it's going to try again. There's a lot of people who think that they're saving the planet by using fabric, but it's woven plastic. They're all I mean, all of the varieties we sell, I stand behind. But again, just wanted to say thank you so much for being with us tonight. So, for them to pull seed out of their stream, you know to ship it raw to be pelleted in the US. I think there's a lot of people who, especially organic growers, just kindof plan that like I'm not going to use chemicals, so they don't get fed. They've since moved on to an LED system. BH: Yeah, you want to be planting out in probablyearly January, whatever your coolest part of the year is. Yeah, this is another. This year I ordered lisianthus plugs from Farmer Bailey. That's really keeping an eye on the natural light outside and supplementing light. They're just going to make a little rosette of leaves, and they're going to wait until next year, and that's really not what you want if you're running a commercial cut flower farm. Well, I don't think they do. In terms of spacing, I like 8 plants per square foot, so if you're using the standard support netting that we can get in the US, it was about 6 inch by 6 inch squares. That's out of the cooler. The other trays will be kept at room temp around 70-75F. If you live near Gro N Sell, you can also go pick up plants yourself. So, group 1s I would get those planted, you know, early very early in the season. Now, being in Vermont, I like to go where it's sunny in the winter time. Look, it'd be great if you if you can do that. Garden Centers. He's going to be covering Lisianthus, talking about production for cut flower growers. But, if you do give them a bad day, you're going toset them back probably for a week. Well,theirs wasn't - they didn't understand the need for these. The Q&A we'll be monitoring. But, if you're selling to a premium florist market, you might want to not pinch it so you can get that full long stem. We get a lot of questions about the bloom groups so you'll see them listed mostly 1, 2, 3, and 4. CF: The fact that it's deer resistant, at least, or deer proof, that makes it very appealing for here in Kentucky for sure. We have very dry air during the winter, so I've elected to dome them and at least keep them damp. FD: Alrighty and then one of our guests noticed that she's hearing that Lisianthus grow longer stems in a tunnel. There's theblue and the champagne. They are big enough to go right intothe ground, but if you just want to plant a bigger transplant, just pop them in a bigger tray. First Editions plants and shrubs. I gasped when I saw the price of lisianthus plugs this year: $76 for 210-cell flats of the 'Mariachi' series and $51 for 'Echo'. That will give you more and smaller stems. If you haven't tried to grow Lisianthus from seed, I encourage you to try it. Fusarium is one of the root rot pathogens that used to be treated with methyl bromide fumigation which, it turns out, is environmentally disastrous. The tiny buds won't develop after cutting, and some growers trim them off (common in Japan) but most just leave them on. When you harvest, cut them back to a couple pairs of leaves, feed and water them well, and hope for the best. But almost anything that's fully composted is greatfor almost all soil. They did well, and I hope to see more of them this spring, now that they have had a chance to drop their own seeds. I prefer to not pinch, resulting in taller stems with larger flowers. But with us, we went for one great stem per season per plant. It must be receiving enough light intensity, again, easily provided in summer. But I want to just very quickly put the poll here and, Bailey, you can see kind of what the demographics are for our group, so most are outside Kentucky. Today is January 15. They came from Johnny's Selected Seeds and are listed as having 95 and 96% germination rates. So, they already take 12 weeks to grow under perfect conditions.
